Avant “The Letter” Review

Ya’ll remember Avant? It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from him, but his new album release “The Letter” (December 7th) is putting him back where he needs to be – on the charts and in our hearts.

If you know your way around the bedroom, several of Avant’s sweet, sexy, soulful and titillating tracks such as “Read Your Mind,” “Making Good Love,” “Nothing in This World,” “Separated,” “Four Minutes,” and “Bedroom Boom” are on your ‘Knocking the Boots’ playlist.

The man has mastered cuff music, but his new album displays his multi-facets. Once dubbed the voice of ghetto soul— Avant has graduated to an artist who is no longer defined by his Cleveland roots, but as an artist that represents new, modern soul. His love ballads are reminiscent of Babyface, Luther Vandross, and R. Kelly. “These guys gave me the drive to write and sing about the way relationships should go,” he said.

What makes Avant relatable as an artist are that his songs tell stories that we’ve all been through. “The Letter” is filled with radio hits, deep with introspection about romance, love, commitment, sex and growing up. His passionate, sultry sounds take us on a journey to an intimate place.

“A letter is what you write to people to tell them what’s going on in your life,” Avant said. “This album is a letter from me to my fans about what’s going on in my life, what’s going through my head and my struggles as a man.”

His album is filled with hits. My favorite is “Where Did We Go?” which speaks about loving in such a digital age. The song talks about the pangs of establishing a relationship in the midst of Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. “I want to stay relevant without being boring.” And he’s doing just that.

Other favorites include “Body Police” and “Wake Up.” “Wake Up” is a sexy ballad about a man coming home late to his woman sleeping. He wants to do a couple things to her, but first she needs to wakeup.

“Walking on Water” which Avant self-proclaims as a wedding classic. In the lyrics he explains, “I finally found someone/A girl I can love forever/ Never thought it would happen for me/ Feels like I’m walking on water; walking on water/When I’m with you, impossible is easy to do.”

“The Letter” is Avant’s sixth album. Born in Cleveland, Ohio he was raised singing in the church. Upcoming projects for Avant include the DVD release of David E. Talbert’s play “In the Nick of Tyme” which also stars Morris Chestnut, Ellia English and Terry Dexter.

Sunrise in Harlem

The rays of the days
Creep along the highway
A paved highway of dreams
Or so it seems
We wake up to our nightmares
Which we've labeled reality
Black versus white, life versus strife
Chess pieces in this game of life
Are you a pawn or are you a knight?
The sun rises in Harlem
The canary reveals
Reveals a bastard without pity
And a slut of 13
Her fruits not yet ripe
Legs in division
Subtraction of hopes
Addition of tears
And this goes on throughout the years
They embrace in the sunset
For they shun the light
Neither understand the damage that has been done
Only if they knew what they've become
Then, only, then would they not fear the sun

Sunday Kind of Love

Great Song by Etta James:
I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I?d like to know it?s more than love at first sight
And I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yea yea

I want a a love that?s on the square
Can?t seem to find somebody
Someone to care
And I'm on a lonely road that leads to no where
I need a Sunday kind of love

I do my Sunday dreaming, Oh yea
And all my Sunday scheming
Every minute, every hour, every day

Oh I?m hoping to discover
A certain kind of lover
Who will show me the way

And my arms need someone
Someone to enfold
To keep me warm when Mondays and Tuesdays grow cold
Love for all my life to have and to hold
Oh and I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yea yea yea

I don't want a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, or Thursday, Friday or Saturday
Oh nothing but Sunday oh yea
I want a Sunday Sunday
I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yea
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday kind of love

Rolly Smokes

I don't smoke cigarettes. All those carcinogens and that smell-- It make me sick just thinking about it. But I had the pleasure of attending this store called Rolly Smokes in Port Charlotte, Fl. This place is awesome! First of all the cigarettes are all natural - they import the dried tobacco free of carcinogens in a variety of flavors. And then they have the tubes that the tobacco goes in, which looks like a regular cigarette. And they stick it through this machine and a carton of cigarettes comes out in 8 minutes. It's cool because you can go in and tell them you want a Newport or a Marlboro light and they can make it exactly how you want it-- as light or as mentholly as you need it. It's a new wave in consumerism because it's all do it yourself. Another perk is that it's way cheaper than at the gas station! A normal carton costs $60, but these only cost around $20. So it's healthier for you, saves you money, it doesn't smell as bad, and you can smoke inside the store! What's not to love. I think I might take a hit just because--- HAHA. Just kidding! You all know what I like to smoke ;).

Green Hair Care

There is a significant green wave hitting this planet, it's taken over our appliances, our clothing, and now it's time to take over those strands upon our heads.

We women spend hours upon hours in hair salons, primping and prepping. But did you know that traditional hair salons waste thousands of gallons of water a day. The shampoos, conditioners, color-treatments and perms are loaded with chemicals, those plastic bottles are rarely recycled, and the water is ALWAYS running!

Mother Earth is requesting too much if she wants up to give up beauty for the sake of the environment. She's a woman so she understands that that can't be done! So, I introduce to you a few salons that are leading the way in reducing our environmental footprint and helping to keep our hair super healthy. These green salons use treatments that are chemical-free and practice recycling waste and water.

Save Water: Shower Pool

Axe sure knows how to act a donkey. Going green is the in thing to do, and Axe figured out how to right. They brainstormed and put all their ideas together, and came up with a shower pooling effort. Instead of being water wasteful, they've concluded that the best way to not deplete our resources is to share. Share the droplets! Share the soap! Share the rag! Share the shower! Together we could save millions of liters of water. Watch the commercial, being water-efficient never felt so good!

What Not to Wear (BFT)

The reality is that you are what you wear. You won’t find a bum rocking the latest Gucci and you won't find a firefighter in clown gear, but you will find CEO’s and executives across the world in tailored Armani suits and sensible Gianni Bini shoes. First impressions are everything in corporate America— and as part of the upcoming generation of employees— I say it’s time for operation business fashion takeover (BFT).

Proctor & Gamble’s ReadyU and the University of Florida’s Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity came together last night to bring “The Dos and Don’t of Business Attire Fashion Show”. I learned basically, don’t wear anything too tight, don’t show your boobies or your booty, make sure your heels aren’t too high. If you’re a man— remember to wear a shirt, match your belt and shoes, wear cufflinks, and minus the monkey suit. Also, make sure nothings wrinkled, don’t wear your grill, gold chain or door knocker earrings. Say what?!?

Basically professionalism takes all the fun out of getting dressed. Who gets excited for grey two piece suits and black librarian pumps? I believe everything is okay in moderation. Here are a couple of styles I found that combine business savvy and fashionista. Operation Business Fashion Takeover (BFT) here we go!

Please don't look like this. She looks boring-- like she belongs in a monastery! Let your clothes show your personality.

A very nice tailored suit works wonders. The minimal jewelry and pulled back hair shows that she means business.

Men's suits should fit just like this one. He also has fabulous shoes and a great tie. Make sure the belt and shoes match!

High-waisted A-line skirts are so necessary. Her black belt adds a little extra flair.

These girls combined fashion and professionalism like its nobody's business. Black and white always go great together.
